Online pharmacies can cost less than local pharmacies, so check online prices before you renew locally. We have not found a UK-wide average showing online pharmacies are cheaper in general. Compare confirmed quotes for the same medicine, strength and order size. Include delivery, collection costs, repeat prices and the support you need.
Check online prices before you pay the next local bill
Some offers exist online but not in a branch. For example, Boots says some offers apply only to its Online Doctor service. Online comparison tables let you check several pharmacies in one place.
Online-only offers are a reason to compare. They do not prove every online quote is cheaper or every local pharmacy is expensive. A starter-dose price may not apply to your current dose either. Compare prices for your own prescription.
How to compare online and local prices like for like
Match these on both quotes:
- Same medicine: the same form, such as pen or tablet, and the same prescribed strength.
- Same amount: the quantity and how long the pharmacy says the order lasts.
- All compulsory fees: consultation, dispensing or programme fees.
- Delivery or collection: delivery to your door against the extra cost of collecting.
- Support: the reviews and help you need.
Do not call a price gap overcharging when one quote covers medicine only and the other covers a full care package. Equally, ask whether you use and value the extras in a dearer package.
Delivery vs collection: a worked example
A local quote is £185, plus £8 of extra travel to collect. A matching online quote is £160 plus £5 delivery. The online total is £165 against £193 locally, a £28 difference for that order. If moving adds a £40 exit charge, the first comparison favours staying by £12.
Count only travel caused by collecting. If you pass the pharmacy anyway, do not charge the whole trip to the order. Note time and convenience separately. People put different values on an hour of their time.
Compare repeat prices after the first-order offer
A first-order offer can change the cheapest option for one order and vanish on the next. Use the three-order test or the full minimum term. Leave unearned referral rewards out of the saving.
Online, you are a new customer at every pharmacy you have not used. Moving each month lets you keep paying a first-order price. Read how to switch pharmacy every month safely.
For your own area, open the county and area planner. The planner works from the quotes you enter. The planner does not invent a local average or check a pharmacy for you.
When paying more at a local pharmacy makes sense
You might value a face-to-face chat, easy collection or an ongoing relationship with one prescriber. Check the local pharmacy offers what you want before you pay more for the service. A nearby address does not promise stock on the day, a prescribing appointment or support for your situation.
Ask the local pharmacy for a competitive quote. If the online total is still lower and the move is workable, look into switching. If the local option suits you better, the lack of a discount code does not make the local option poor value.
Frequently asked questions
Are online pharmacies cheaper than local pharmacies for weight-loss treatment?
Sometimes. Online pharmacies can offer a lower total, but we have not found a UK-wide average showing they are cheaper in general. Compare confirmed quotes for the same medicine, strength and order size, including delivery and collection costs.
Do Boots online weight-loss offers apply in store?
Not always. Boots says some offers apply only to its Online Doctor service. Check whether an offer you have seen online is available at a Boots branch before you compare prices.
Should I include travel costs when comparing a local pharmacy?
Include only travel costs caused by collecting the order. In one illustration, a £185 local quote plus £8 travel came to £193, against £165 online including delivery. A £40 exit charge would reverse the result.
Can I ask my local pharmacy to match an online price?
Yes, ask the local pharmacy for a competitive quote. If the online total is still lower and the move is workable, look into switching. A local option you value can still be good value without a discount code.
