Pharmacy loyalty: how much is staying costing you?

Work out what staying with your pharmacy out of habit costs you. Compare your next weight-loss order with a new-customer price at another pharmacy.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Pharmacy loyalty costs money when you keep paying a higher total for a service you can get for less elsewhere. Staying earns you no discount. Compare your next quote with a suitable pharmacy, including the new-customer price at one you have not used. Count the care you value and any real cost of leaving.

Check your pharmacy’s next price, even if you like the service

The pharmacy which helped you start treatment may have served you well. You can value that help and still check the next bill. A good past experience tells you nothing about whether today’s price is competitive.

Ask yourself one question. If I chose today, with my current treatment and support needs, would I accept this total? Then the decision rests on what you get now, instead of how long you have been a customer.

How to work out what pharmacy loyalty costs you

ILLUSTRATION · IDENTICAL SUPPLY ASSUMED

Say your current full quote is £210 and a suitable alternative costs £170. The gap is £40 per order. Over six matching orders, the gap adds up to £240 before moving costs. With a real £50 cost to leave, the net difference in this example is £190.

These figures do not predict your prices or treatment. Use confirmed quotes for the same medicine and the number of orders you are weighing up. Check the schedule before you treat a four-week pack as a calendar month.

What does the higher pharmacy price buy you?

If you stay, know why. You may value a clinician you can reach, support you use, collection which suits you or a tricky transfer still to sort out. Each of these is a fair reason to weigh up. “I have always gone there” says nothing about the value of your next order.

Check whether the other pharmacy includes the support you need. A higher bill does not prove better care. The cheapest pharmacy is not always suitable either. Check price and care quality separately.

Old discounts and referral credit do not tie you in

You do not owe a company endless orders in return for a welcome offer. A contract discount may have conditions, so check whether leaving triggers a real charge. Separate a feeling of owing them from any amount due under the deal you accepted.

Unused referral credit should not trap you either. If the next order still costs more after credit you can use, compare other pharmacies. See the referral-credit decision guide.

Welcome offers are for new customers, and you are still one at every pharmacy you have not used. Read how to pay the new-customer price each month.

Ask your current pharmacy for its best repeat price

Ask for the best repeat price for your exact medicine and pack, and how long the price lasts. If a better offer needs a new commitment, count the full cost of the commitment.

If staying still costs more, decide whether the better service is worth the extra to you. If not, plan the move with accurate records and a clear cancellation. You can compare local with local, local with online or online with local.

Use your area’s price worksheet to set the numbers side by side. Treatment decisions stay with your clinician. This price check helps you stop paying more than you need to.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out what pharmacy loyalty costs me?

Take the gap between your current full quote and a suitable alternative, times the number of matching orders. Then subtract any real cost of leaving. For example, £40 less per order over six orders is £240, or £190 after a £50 exit cost.

Should I stay with my pharmacy because it helped me start treatment?

You can value past help from your pharmacy and still check the next bill. Ask whether you would accept the total if you chose today. Name what the higher price buys, such as a clinician you can reach or collection which suits you.

Does unused referral credit mean I should stay with my pharmacy?

No. If your next order still costs more after referral credit you can use, compare other pharmacies. Check whether a contract discount has conditions which create a real cost of leaving.

Can I ask my current pharmacy for a better repeat price?

Yes. Ask your current pharmacy for its best repeat price for your exact medicine and pack, and how long the price lasts. If the offer needs a new commitment, count the full cost of that commitment in your comparison.
